"Jagvar" (Jagvar)

I took advantage of the nice weather today and went for a hike in Maryland. As I was walking back to the car, I noticed this gem parked by the trail head: a 750iL! As I discretely peered inside, I noticed the glass looked kind of...thick. Bulletproof, maybe? If so, that would make this one of the rare "Protection Line" light armored vehicles from 2000-01.

there were more Protection Line's sold to the public then one would guess.... I'm sure it's the best selling 'bulletproof' car any company has ever sold. It's the only 'bulletproof' car i've ever seen on the road, and i've seen 3 or 4 examples myself

German lux sedans of this era had really thick glass for like noise insulation purposes. I remember my moms 400SE had some crazy thick glass, it always looked weird to me.

Wonder how much it costs to keep one of those running?

A lot more 750s were sold with insulated, double-glazed windows for soundproofing than were sold with the (extremely expensive) protection package. However, protection package cars lack sunroofs, so if this one had no sunroof, then bingo, you probably spotted a rare light-armored E38. Another identifier: as far as I know all protection models also lacked buttons for the back windows on the driver's armrest—that is, only the rear passengers can roll down their own windows. (EDIT) the rear windows just plain don't go down.

I had a 750IL pass me coming the other way down the block from my house. I almost crashed staring at the thing. Even here on Long Island, I see more Gallardos and 458's than old v12 BMWs.

One of these days I will own an E38.

I'm, like, 90% sure this one had no sunroof. But I might be wrong.

No more arms and legs than any other BMW V12 (bad enough), with one big exception—those bulletproof windows. Not that you're probably going to break one—because, duh, they're strong—but if you did, yikes: here's a parts diagram showing, for example, that the rear window alone runs over $13k. If you can get one.

Oh yeah they will break. Bulletproof glass is a lot more sensitive to cracks and bubbles being formed in-between the layers and especially cold water in hot days.

In that case, our hypothetical 750iLP buyer can look forward to spending a total of about $55k(!) for a full set of windows for their old BMW sedan.
